High fluoride levels in drinking water have become a critical health hazard. In the present study, the performance of magnesia-loaded fly ash adsorption in the removal of fluoride from aqueous solution was investigated in a batch study. The effect of contact time, dosage, pH, temperature and agitation speed was studied at different values. The maximum removal efficiency was 88 % at 150 min. The effective dose of adsorbent was found to be 2.5 g/l. The optimum pH was found to be at pH 4. Kinetic studies and isotherm studies were also performed to understand the ability of the adsorbents. The monolayer adsorption capacity determined from the Langmuir adsorption equation was found to be 11.61 mg/g. The kinetic measurements suggested the involvement of pseudo-second-order kinetics in adsorption and were controlled by a particle diffusion process. Overall, the results of this study suggest that magnesia-loaded fly ash is an environmentally friendly, efficient and low-cost adsorbent, useful for the removal of fluoride from aqueous solution.  相似文献

Phosphorus removal in vegetated filter strips   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
Vegetated filter strips (VFS) are used recently for removal, at or near the source, of sediment and sediment-bound chemicals from cropland runoff. Vegetation within the flowpath increases water infiltration and decreases water turbulence, thus enhancing pollutant removal by sedimentation within filter media and infiltration through the filter surface. Field experiments have been conducted to examine the efficiency of vegetated filter strips for phosphorus removal from cropland runoff with 20 filters with varying length (2 to 15 m), slope (2.3 and 5%), and vegetated cover, including bare-soil plots as control. Artificial runoff used in this study had an average phosphorus concentration of 2.37 mg L(-1) and a sediment concentration of 2700 mg L(-1). The average phosphorus trapping efficiency of all vegetated filters was 61% and ranged from 31% in a 2-m filter to 89% in a 15-m filter. Filter length has been found to be the predominant factor affecting P trapping in VFS. The rate of inflow, type of vegetation, and density of vegetation coverage had secondary influences on P removal. Short filters (2 and 5 m), which are somewhat effective in sediment removal, are much less effective in P removal. Increasing the filter length beyond 15 m is ineffective in enhancing sediment removal but is expected to further enhance P removal. Sediment deposition, infiltration, and plant adsorption are the primary mechanisms for phosphorus trapping in VFS.  相似文献

A new sensitive analytical procedure has been developed for the determination of residues of endosulfan in human blood samples. The method involves the extraction of residues of endosulfan from blood samples by the addition of 60% sulfuric acid at 10 degrees C, liquid/liquid partitioning by using hexane and acetone mixture (9:1) and quantification by using GC-ECD. Residues of endosulfan in blood samples were quantified as the sum of alpha-endosulfan, beta-endosulfan, endosulfan sulfate and endosulfandiol. The influence of temperature during the extraction has been studied. Recovery experiments were conducted over the concentration range 1.0-50 ng ml(-1) and the relative standard deviation calculated. The method was found to be sufficiently sensitive to quantify the residue of total endosulfan up to the 1.0 ng ml(-1) level. The recovery was 92% with a calculated relative standard deviation of 1.96%. Conversion of endosulfan to endosulfandiol is found to be less than 0.5% under the defined conditions. The method was applied to the analysis of residue contents of endosulfan and its metabolites in blood samples collected from the exposed population. The data obtained has been confirmed by GC-MS-EI in selective ion monitoring (SIM) mode.  相似文献

Aquatic insect diversity in the Chandrabhaga, an important headwater stream of Garhwal Himalayas, was surveyed for a period of twelve months (October 1999 to September 2000). All the important physico-chemical environmental variables (temperature, water velocity, hydromedian depth, transparency, turbidity, total dissolved solids, pH, alkalinity, dissolved oxygen, free CO2, nitrates, phosphates, sodium and potassium) of the aquatic ecosystem were measured monthly for one year. Aquatic insects were sampled from three sites (S1, S2 & S3) of the headwater stream Chandrabhaga. Aquatic insects of Chandrabhaga were represented by the members of the orders of Ephemeroptera, Trichoptera, Coleoptera, Diptera, Plecoptera and Odonata. The maximum density of aquatic insects was recorded in the month of March (4,165 ind. m−2) and minimum in the month of August (680 ind. m−2). The annual contribution of Trichoptera (38%) and Ephemeroptera (32%) was observed to be maximum, while Odonata contributed minimum (2%) to the total aquatic insect density. The present study on the relationship between physico-chemical environmental variables and the density of aquatic insects revealed that the velocity of water, hydromedian depth, turbidity and dissolved oxygen in addition to composition and texture of the bottom substrates have significant impact on benthic aquatic insects’ density and their diversity. The ecological relevance of the measured hydrological attributes was investigated by composing their degree of correlation with insects density and diversity. The diversity index (Shannon–Weiner) of aquatic insects dwelling in the Chandrabhaga river ranged from 2.54 to 3.86. Some of the natural and anthropogenic environmental factors contributing towards the degradation of the watershed of the Chandrabhaga have been identified, and ameliorative measures for the conservation of the aquatic insect diversity have been suggested.  相似文献

Geochemical study of groundwater from a structurally deformed granitic terrain near Hyderabad (India) was carried out to understand and evaluate the hydrogeochemical processes and quality of groundwater. Several trace elements (Fe, Mn, Be, Al, V, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Sr, Mo, Cd, Sb, Ba, Pb, U) along with major ions and minor elements were precisely estimated in shallow and drilled wells to know the suitability of water for drinking and irrigation purposes. Analytical data shows that pH and major ion chemistry in dug wells and bore wells do not vary significantly, while some trace elements (Fe, Mn, Al, Be, Co, Pb, U and Zn) vary in dug wells and bore wells, which can be attributed to differential mineral weathering and dissolution/precipitation reactions along fractures/joints. Although the water is not potable, it was found to be suitable for irrigation with little danger in the development of harmful level of exchangeable sodium. It is inferred that the chemical composition of the groundwater in this region is likely to have its origin from silicate weathering reactions and dissolution/precipitation processes supported by rainfall and groundwater flow.  相似文献

Abstract

Bentazone is one of the toxic insecticides used to control forest tent caterpillar moths, boll weevils, gypsy moths, and other types of moths in various field crops. We report the efficacy of biochar prepared from the Azardirachta Indica waste biomass as adsorbent for removal of Bentazone. Biochar material was prepared by pyrolysis process under limited oxygen conditions. Biochar material was characterized by proximate and ultimate analysis, SEM analysis, FTIR analysis and TG/DTA analyses. The Bentazone adsorption capacity by biochar from aqueous solutions was assessed. Effect of time, adsorbent dosage, insecticide concentration and pH on the adsorption characteristics of the biochar were evaluated. Adsorption parameters were obtained at equilibrium contact time of 150?min, with biochar dosage of 0.5?g at pH 8. From the optimization studies, desirability of 0.952 was obtained with response (adsorption uptake) of 79.40?mg/g, for initial concentration of insecticide (50?mg/L), adsorbent dosage (0.448?g), time 30.0?min and pH 2. The adsorption isotherm data for the removal of Bentazone fitted well with the Freundlich isotherm. This study indicates that the biochar produced from the bark of Azardirachta Indica biomass could be employed as a potential adsorbent for removal of synthetic organic pollutants from the water streams.  相似文献

Analyses of environmentally persistent pollutants like polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) isomers, and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and its metabolites in seawater and sediment samples collected from six locations along the east coast of India were carried out using High-Resolution Gas Chromatograph with High-Resolution Mass Spectrometer (HRGC-HRMS). Sediment and water from Chennai harbour and Cuddalore fishing harbour contained higher concentration of all the compounds. The highest concentration (6570 pg/g dry weight) of total PCB was found in sediment from Chennai harbour followed by sediments sampled in Chennai (opposite to Cooum River mouth) (505 pg/g), Cuddalore fishing harbour (335 pg/g) and Mandapam (251 pg/g). Concentrations in other locations were two orders of magnitude lower than Chennai harbour. A distinct PCB distribution pattern in sediment was observed between harbours and other locations. Greater concentrations of tetra-, penta- and hexachlorobiphenyls were observed in sediments of harbours and opposite to Cooum river mouth, but in other locations lower chlorinated biphenyls (di, tri and tetra-) were more. In seawater, HCH concentration was greater than DDT, but it was quite opposite in sediments. Elevated levels of DDT in sediment were observed only at highly populated urban locations, reflecting the local usage and input of this pesticide. Based on sediment/water quality criteria/guidelines, some coastal locations of the Bay of Bengal could be designated as being polluted by DDTs and gamma-HCH (lindane), but not by PCBs. This investigation reveals the declining trend on the environmental burden of persistent pesticides in Indian marine environment. Data on the organochlorine concentrations found in this survey can be used as reference levels for future POPs monitoring programme.  相似文献

The analytical figure of merit of the potential of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) has been evaluated for detection of trace element in liquid. LIBS data of Mg, Cr, Mn, and Re were studied. Various optical geometries, which produce the laser spark in and at the liquid sample, were tested. The calibration curves for Mg, Cr, Mn, and Re were obtained at the optimized experimental conditions with bulk liquid and in liquid jet. It was found that measurements using a liquid jet provide better detection limits than bulk liquid measurements. The limits of detection (LOD) of Mg, Cr, Mn, and Re in the present liquid jet measurement are found to be 0.1, 0.4, 0.7, and 8 ppm, respectively. The LOD of Mg using Mg 279.55 nm was compared with the values found in other liquid work.  相似文献
